Cancer

Anyone can be diagnosis with cancer.  It is reported that in the US, 1 out of 2 men and 1 out of 3 women will develop some kind of cancer in their lifetime. In 2020, the American Cancer Society was projecting that there would be over 1.8 million new cases.  These numbers are staggering.  That is why it is so important to have a plan in place to protect your assets (savings accounts, 401k balances, stocks, bonds, etc.).  How would you pay for the treatments related to care for yourself or your family?  The cost of treating cancer are more than just what a health insurance plan will cover.  Such as travel expenses (car expenses, trains, cabs, flights, car rental, food, hotel expenses) to a treatment center, cancer drugs (specialty medications and costs are very expensive even with a drug plan), home care, and lost wages.  You need to plan for how you would handle this situation if it happened to you or a family member.  This is where a cancer policy comes in.  A cancer policy is inexpensive and can help you pay for the expense related to cancer care.  This allows your savings to stay in place for emergencies (if policy is large enough to cover expenses).  It is the protection that your family needs.  Benefits of the policy can be paid to you or directly to the provider.

Heart Attack or Stroke

Heart disease remains the #1 cause of death, with cancer coming in at #2, and stroke at #5.   These are definite risks that you are going to want to try to manage.   The most common type of heart disease is coronary heart disease, which can lead to a heart attack.  According to statistics available though the CDC, 795,000 people suffer a stroke and 805,000 people have a heart attack each year, with some people having recurring strokes or heart attacks.

You can protect yourself with a cancer and heart attack or stroke policy.  The plan pays out in a lump sum benefit that can be used to pay for out of pocket expenses related to the treatment and recovery (such as lost wages and home care) of cancer, and heart attack or stroke.  The policy is available for those age 18-89 and benefits will be paid to you or to the provider that you choose.  The plan pays regardless of other coverage so it can be used to pay deductible, co-payments, coinsurance, prescription costs, etc.  It's protection that your family needs and deserves.

Hospital Indemnity

This plan is designed to help fill the holes in other insurance coverage such as Affordable Care or Medicare.  Do you have a large deductible on your plan?  Then a hospital indemnity plan can help.  If you are a senior on a Medicare Advantage plan, then you have a copay of somewhere around $300 per day for up to 7 days (this varies by plan).  So a hospital stay could cost you around $2,000 depending on how many days you were an inpatient in the hospital.  With a hospital indemnity plan, you customize the plan to pay you either a certain amount per day or in a lump sum.  The plan would then reimburse you the amount that you designated and you would be covered for the amount that you were out-of-pocket.   If you are on an Affordable care plan and have a $6,100 deductible, then you will have to pay the deductible and any co-payment that you have related to hospitalization.   The hospital indemnity could be set up to pay a certain amount per day to help off-set this deductible amount.  Medico has coverage from 40-85 and Aetna has coverage from 18-89.  There are also riders that can be added for an additional charge and can reimburse for such expenses as ambulance, urgent care visits, skilled nursing facility, outpatient surgery and more.

Dental

Medicare or Affordable Care doesn't pay for dental services such as cleanings and x-rays.  You must purchase stand alone plans to cover these expenses.  So it is important to find a plan that fits your needs and budget.  I am contracted through several insurance companies to make sure that you find the right fit.

Some people wonder if dental coverage is worth it.  In my opinion, yes it is.  If you are getting your routine care done, 2 cleanings a year with x-rays, then you are basically breaking even.  Let's say a comprehensive exam that includes a cleaning, oral cancer screening, and x-rays costs $250.00  Then you have a second cleaning that is cleaning and oral cancer screening and it costs $125.00.  That would be $375.  If you're dental plan runs you $30.00 per month that would be $360 in premiums for the year.  So you are breaking even on a plan that pays 100% on your preventive work.  Now where having insurance comes into play is if you dentist said that you have 2 cavities and need to have work done....or if you need a crown.  These are more expensive and if you've already broke even on having your plan then you are definitely coming out ahead.  Having insurance is coverage for life's "what-ifs".  You never know what is coming around the corner and it's better to have the coverage in place to handle it, then to try to scramble around and come up with money when you are in pain and need some type of dental work done.  Because life sometimes has a way of compounding you woes and the timing could be really lousy.  Just my two cents.....you decide for yourself.  :) Below are the links to a few of the companies that I represent.  You can shop online and  enroll if you find a plan that works for you or I would be happy to schedule an appointment with you to further discuss the plan details.

Vision

Medicare also doesn't pay for vision related services such as eye examinations, frames and lenses, contacts, prescription sunglasses, etc.  You will be required to pay for these expenses at 100%, unless you have a vision policy.  Medicare will pay for certain disease related conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts, including the exam to diagnose these conditions.

A stand alone vision plan can cost around $10 per month and cover your exam and give you an allowance to go towards frames and lenses or contacts.  You can also purchase vision as part of a dental, vision, and hearing plan (all in one).
